In-House Patent Counsel

State Farm seeks an In-House Patent Counsel to lead patent strategy for innovative insurance and financial services solutions. In this role, you will partner with product, technology, and R&D teams to identify inventions, draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications, and manage a focused IP portfolio. You will conduct prior art and freedom-to-operate analyses, advise on IP risk, support licensing and vendor agreements, and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards, while contributing to a collaborative, inclusive culture that supports growth and development.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute patent strategy aligned with State Farm business objectives
• Identify patentable inventions in collaboration with product, technology, and R&D teams

• Conduct prior art, patentability, and freedom-to-operate analyses

• Review and negotiate IP-related terms in contracts, NDAs, and licenses
• Support IP aspects of partnerships, M&A, and vendor engagements
• Monitor IP, insurance, and tech legal developments impacting the business
• Promote IP awareness and training across internal teams
