The City of Alexandria seeks a Legislative Director to lead development and execution of its state and federal legislative agenda. Reporting to senior leadership, this role monitors and analyzes legislation, drafts policy positions and testimony, and advises elected and appointed officials on impacts to city services and residents. The Director will coordinate across departments to identify priorities, represent the City before legislative bodies and partner organizations, and build strong relationships with policymakers. The position supports Alexandria's culture of public service, integrity, and inclusiveness while advancing community-focused policy outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the City's state and federal legislative agenda
- Advise City leadership on policy, legislation, and regulatory impacts
- Monitor, analyze, and report on proposed bills and regulations
- Draft policy briefs, position statements, and testimony
- Coordinate with departments to identify legislative needs and impacts
- Build and maintain relationships with legislators, agencies, and associations
- Represent the City at hearings, meetings, and intergovernmental forums
- Lead advocacy strategies and coalition-building on key issues
- Prepare briefings and presentations for elected officials and stakeholders
- Supervise legislative staff and manage related projects and timelines
