Anesthesiology - Cardiac Physician

Position Overview:

We have an immediate need for (2) locum Cardiac Anesthesiology Physicians to provide interventional procedures for our veteran population at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Cetner located in Aurora, CO. These roles offer an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on veterans lives while experiencing the unique beauty of the Colorado Rockies.

Scope of Care:

Locum Anesthesiology physician (as appropriate and within scope of privileging) shall be responsible for providing Anesthesiology care, including, but not limited to providing general anesthesia care, preoperative and postoperative. Providing acute pain management, airway assistance, CPR, sedation and anesthesia outside of the operating room as needed and other tasks assigned by the anesthesia in charge for the day.

  • Clinic and Surgical Care: Contracted physician shall provide clinical Anesthesiology services. Contracted physician shall be present on time for any scheduled clinics/surgeries as documented by physical presence in the clinic or operating room at the scheduled start time and for preoperative meetings and daily morning anesthesia meetings.
    • Operative Services: Contracted physician shall provide comprehensive clinical anesthesiology services including patients undergoing cardiac surgery, orthopedic joint replacement, and major vascular, thoracic, neurosurgical, plastic, ENT, urologic and ophthalmologic operations.
    • Contracted physician shall provide clinical care of patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, electrophysiology, gastrointestinal and radiological suites.
    • Contracted physician shall provide primary coverage for all patients in the short stay unit, diagnostic trans esophageal echocardiography for medical and surgical patients, and emergency airway management.
    • Contracted physician shall provide consultative services at the patient s bedside if the patient is not ambulatory, and in the clinic setting if the patient is able to report to the outpatient clinic.
  • Medications: Contracted physician shall follow all established medication policies and procedures. No sample medications shall be provided to patients.
  • Discharge education: Contracted physician shall provide discharge education and follow up instructions that are coordinated with the next care setting for all Anesthesiology clinical or surgical patients.
  • Communication of Test Results: Mechanisms must be in place to provide notification of test results for patients receiving care in accordance with VHA Directive 1088, Communicating Test Results to Providers and Patients.
  • Quality Improvement Meetings: The Contractor s physician(s) shall participate in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings with committee participation as required by the VA facility Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee.

Must have completed a residency in anesthesiology and be Board Certified/Board Eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA).

Credentialling and onboarding takes approximately 4-6 weeks.

Hours & Schedule:

VA Business Hours: RMRVAMC operating room hours are 0700 to 1730 Monday through Friday. Anesthesiology physician(s) will be scheduled to work 10-hour shifts. As needed for patient care, some shifts may exceed 10 hours and adjustments may be made to shorten future shifts upon agreement of both parties. Typical call hours are expected to be from 1730 until 0700 Monday-Friday, and 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday. All work and call schedules will be coordinated with COR to ensure optimal coverage of clinical operations.

  • Patients must be seen by a Anesthesiology physician(s) on-site at the facility in a timely manner in accordance with VA Rules and Regulations on clinic wait times and consult completion.
  • Anesthesiology physician(s) shall be available and present in clinic during normal facility clinic hours, which will be established, and may be revised, as deemed appropriate for patient care by the Chief of Staff. Currently, normal clinic hours are 0700 to1530.
  • Off-hours Coverage: Anesthesiology physician must be available on call during all hours when the facility clinic is closed, including evenings, weekends and holidays. On-call schedule will be coordinated in advance to ensure optimal coverage of clinical operations.
    • On-call contractor s board certified or eligible physician must be available when scheduled on-call for phone consultations with VA residents and physicians.
    • On-call providers must be available within 15 minutes by phone and on-site, within 60 minutes.
