This locum Neonatologist opportunity offers long-term coverage in a Level III NICU within a Level I Trauma Center. The provider will deliver comprehensive neonatal care, including management of critically ill newborns, attendance at high-risk deliveries, and performance of advanced neonatal procedures. Coverage is needed due to staffing shortages, with both daytime and night/weekend call responsibilities available throughout the year-long assignment.

Dates & Schedule
  • Coverage Period: July 1, 2026 July 1, 2027
  • Coverage Needed: Approximately 9 weeks of daytime coverage and 9 weeks of night/weekend call coverage
  • Preferred Scheduling: Continuous blocks of 7 14 days
  • Day Shift: 10-hour shifts
  • Night Coverage: 14-hour home call
    • Must be able to arrive at the hospital within 30 minutes if called in
  • Call Ratio: 1:4
  • Call Schedule: Variable and subject to change based on staffing needs
  • Reason for Coverage: Short staffing
Job Details & Responsibilities
  • Provide neonatal care in a Level III NICU and Special Care Nursery
  • Manage an average daily census of approximately 31 neonatal patients
  • Evaluate and treat approximately 3 admissions per day
  • Attend high-risk deliveries and cesarean sections
  • Manage ventilatory support, including:
    • BiPAP/CPAP
    • Oscillator ventilation
    • Nitric Oxide (iNO) therapy
  • Perform advanced neonatal procedures, including:
    • Chest tube insertion
    • Central venous line placement
    • Arterial line insertion
    • PA catheter insertion
    • Umbilical Venous Catheterization (UVC)
    • Umbilical Artery Catheterization (UAC)
    • PICC line placement and support for difficult line placements
  • Respond to neonatal emergencies and participate in neonatal resuscitations
  • Potentially supervise Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNPs)
  • Document all patient care activities using Epic EMR
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary NICU staff including nursing, therapy, nutrition, and child life teams

  • Bed Capacity:
    • 33 licensed NICU beds
    • 12 Special Care Nursery beds
    • 2 bassinets
    • 47 total beds
  • Night Coverage Team: One attending Neonatologist with two in-house NNPs
  • Day Coverage Team: Two Neonatologists sharing patient care responsibilities with NNPs and/or residents
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Board Certified in Neonatology Required
    • Truly Board Eligible candidates will be considered
  • Completion of Neonatology fellowship Required
  • Active Michigan medical license at time of submission Required
  • Current NRP Advanced Provider or NRP Instructor status Required
  • NALS certification Preferred
  • Experience managing critically ill neonatal patients in a Level III NICU or similar environment
  • Proficiency in advanced neonatal ventilation management and invasive procedures
  • Self-Query NPDB report dated within 30 days of presentation Required
  • Submission of rates at time of name clear Required
